Acclaimed Exhibition Smash at the Met in New York

CHICAGO, Jan. 2 /-USNewswire/ -- The Art Institute of Chicago announces that tickets will go on sale December 15, 2006, for the major exhibition Cezanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde. The exhibition has already received national and international acclaim and drew a devoted audience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It will be presented at the Art Institute from February 17 to May 12, 2007, before ending its run at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Featuring scores of works by such legendary modern artists as Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso from international collections -- including private collections and works that rarely travel from other institutions -- this exhibition promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Cezanne to Picasso details the fascinating story of Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), a pioneer dealer, patron, and publisher in turn-of-the-century Paris. Vollard was in his early 20s when he abandoned a legal career to open a small art gallery. He established himself by presenting Cezanne's first ever one-man exhibition in 1895; a significant van Gogh retrospective in 1896; a Paul Gauguin's important 1898 exhibition of Tahitian works; and Pablo Picasso's first exhibition in Paris, to name a few. Over the succeeding years, Vollard bought and sold thousands of pictures and even on occasion purchased the entire contents of an artist's studio, sometimes keeping the works for years until he felt that the market would be receptive. Vollard was a brilliant, shrewd promoter of the artists he represented, and his often eccentric personality added to his larger-than-life image in the art world.

A 450-page, full-color exhibition catalogue accompanies the exhibition. It includes 22 scholarly essays examining Vollard's career and expertise in the art market; his relationships with individual artists and collectors; and a wealth of information gleaned from the newly available Vollard Archives, Paris, as well as lavish reproductions.
