Reduced travel costs impacts UNICEF's ability to save children's lives

NEW YORK, March 26 /-USNewswire/ -- For the fifth consecutive year, Delta Air Lines SkyWish, the charitable arm of the SkyMiles(R) frequent flyer program, has chosen the U.S. Fund for UNICEF as a charitable partner to receive donated miles from Delta customers for travel in support of UNICEF's life saving work on behalf of the world's children.

"No one is immune to the ill effects of our current economy -- especially charitable organizations and other non-profits, that's why we're so appreciative that Delta has continued to generously support our global work on behalf of the world's most vulnerable children," said Caryl Stern, President and CEO, U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "This relationship has allowed the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to significantly reduce our business travel costs, which has a direct impact on our ability to reduce the daily deaths of children from preventable causes from 25,000 to zero."

Last year, Delta SkyMiles members donated over 20 million miles to support the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, which was an increase of over 2 million miles from 2007. The total miles donated over five years amounts to 73 million.

"Delta SkyMiles customers clearly embrace our belief that no child should ever die from a preventable disease," Stern added.

The value of miles donated in 2008 exceeded $600,000. According to UNICEF, $600,000 can provide 1 dose of vaccine to 4 million children against polio or provide 120,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets which can protect families from malaria, a preventable disease that continues to kill an African child every 30 seconds.

All donations can be made by e-mailing" target="_new"> and including your name, SkyMiles number, SkyWish charity name, donation amount, and telephone number. If you would like to make a donation by fax or mail, Contact SkyMiles. Donations can also be made by calling the SkyMiles automated phone line at 1-800-325-3999*. Donations must be a minimum of 5,000 miles and are not tax deductible for SkyMiles members or Delta. Allow up to 6 weeks for miles to be deducted from your account.
